What Do Gutters Do? And Why Are Clean Gutters So Important?

You’ve heard the phrase, “The squeaky wheel gets the grease?” Well, such is the case with your home’s gutter system. Gutters are a simple contraption that protect your entire home and ask for very little in return. Unfortunately, most homeowners neglect their gutters until they “squeak”—or in this case, sag, leak, ruin your roofing system, or perhaps worst of all, cause costly foundational damage.

By cleaning out your gutters, you’ll protect your home, save cash on preventable repairs, and ensure the structural integrity of your house.

How do Gutters Work?

Gutters are part of an ingenious water channeling system that collects rainwater, pushes it to a downspout, and redirects it away from your home. That last part is especially important. Diverting water away from your home protects the basement from flooding and the foundation from cracking.

Why do Gutters Matter so Much?

Without a free-flowing gutter system, water would collect on your roof, causing rot, mold, and leakage. But that’s just the start. By collecting water and redirecting it away from your home, gutters also protect your fascia, siding, landscaping, foundation, and basement, all while deterring pests and rodents. Mosquitos love standing water—and rodents love to build nests in clogged and leafy gutter systems.

How do I Clean My Gutters?

We established how gutters work and why a free-flowing system is important. But what’s the best way to clean them?

If you’re a diehard DIYer, find a ladder and a little courage because you’ll be working at roof height. Next, grab:

  • A Pair of Gloves: Gutters accumulate a variety of delightful surprises, including roof debris, leaves, rodents, and sludgy buildup. You’re going to get your hands dirty, so grab a pair of gloves.

  • Yard and Lawn Bags: You’ll need a bundle of yard and lawn bags to dispose of all the refuse. We recommend gathering the debris in a bucket hooked to you, instead of dropping it onto the lawn. You don’t want to end up having a mess on the ground too.

  • A Loyal Friend: Being on a ladder can be dangerous, especially if you’re standing on unsteady ground. Have a friend stand at the base of the ladder to steady it as you work.

  • A Hose: You want pristine gutters, so you may have to use a hose or plumber’s snake to release stubborn grime and clogged downspouts.

Or, you could reclaim your weekend and hire a professional!
